Thankful for Past Me: How Systems Save You When Life Gets Heavy

Lately, I’ve been so exhausted with life.

You know those seasons where you’re stretched thin — trying to keep up with work, family, responsibilities — and your brain feels like it’s running on 2% battery? Yeah, that’s where I’ve been.

But even when I’m running on fumes, the work doesn’t stop.
Emails still need to be answered.
Client projects still need to move forward.
Bills still need to be paid.

And sometimes, when I sit down to work, I forget my own processes — the steps I normally take to get things done — because I’m just that tired.

When Systems Step In

Here’s the thing: I don’t actually need to remember my processes.

Because they’re all in Asana already.

And that’s what I’m so incredibly thankful for right now — past me.

Past me took the time to set up systems, workflows, and templates in Asana that keep everything running, even when present me is too tired to think straight.

So when I log in and can’t remember what comes next, Asana reminds me.
When I forget how I structured something, the steps are right there.
When my brain feels like mush, my systems hold the structure for me.

Honestly, it feels like having a business safety net.

Systems Aren’t Just for Efficiency — They’re for Compassion

People often talk about systems like they’re purely about productivity — saving time, staying organized, scaling your business.

And yes, they’re absolutely great for all of that.

But here’s something I’ve learned the hard way:
Systems are also an act of self-compassion.

They give you breathing room when life feels hard.
They let you step away without everything falling apart.
They support you when your energy dips — because the structure is already there.

That’s why I’m so grateful for past me — the version of me who took the time to set things up before burnout hit.

A Note for You

If you’ve ever wished you could take a mental break without your business collapsing, this is your reminder: You can — if you have systems.
